The lyric is "I'm Doin' It For Defense," the Arlen/Mercer song which Betty Hutton sang in "Star Spangled Rhythm." The question involves "I'm Like A Fish Out Of Water, the Whiting/Mercer song from "Hollywood Hotel." I have the music for it, but the printed lyrics don't include a line which I remember about "...like Ginger Rogers leading the Brooklyn Dodgers." Could someone give me confirmation about the "Rogers/Dodgers" line? And where does it fit into the lyric? Any help would be appreciated.

For what it's worth, here's the introduction in the sheet music (which seems to imply a male singer): Ev'rybody says I'm witty, I can even please my boss, I took Pelmanism To give me magnetism, So I could put myself across; And so it really seems a pity You put me at a total loss. I'm like (etc.) - - - - - Some of the topical names vary a bit. It's Mae West, for instance, who fails as an ingenue. The one i found most puzzling was "like Eddie Cantor doing a Van Devanter" -- referring, I guess, to the Supreme Court's Willis Van Devanter. waggi
