Hi Alexi,
I will post this one for you, and when I have more time I will spend some time looking for others for you. The Rules of the Road (Cy Coleman, Carolyn Leigh) So these are the ropes, The tricks of the trade, The rules of the road. You're one of the dopes For whom they were made, The rules of the road. You follow that kiss and recklessly miss A bend of the road, Then suddenly this-- The end of the road. So love is a hoax, A glittering stream Of little white lies. But these are the jokes, And what if they bring The tears to your eyes? Well, love often shows a funny return. The brighter it glows, The longer you burn. And Lord only knows Love has little concern for the fools of the road. But that's how it goes, You live and you learn, The rules of the road. But that's how it goes, You live and you learn, The rules of the road. And everyone knows that that's how it goes, The rules of the road. ~~~~~~~~~ This was recorded by Nat King Cole (above version), Tony Bennett, and a few more artists as well. Enjoy! "Keep a song in your heart, and let your smile sing"

Hi Alexi,
Here are some from their musical, "Little Me". LITTLE ME Music by Cy Coleman Lyrics by Carolyn Leigh Book by Neil Simon I'VE GOT YOUR NUMBER I've got your number, I know you inside out, You ain't no Eagle Scout, Youre all at sea! Oh, yes. Youll brag a lot, Wave your own flag a lot, But youre unsure a lot. You're a lot like me. Oh, I've got your number, And what you're looking for, And what youre looking for Just suits me fine! Well break the rules a lot, Well be damn' foots a lot. But then why should we not, How could we not combine, When I've got your number And I've got the glow you've got, I've got your number and baby, You know you've got mine! ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TRACKS On the other side of the tracks, That is where Im goin' to be On the other side of the great divide, Between fame and fortune and me! Gonna put my shadows behind me. Give my inhibitions the axe; And tomorrow morning youll find me. On the other side of the tracks. On the other side of that line, Where the life is fancy and free, Gonna sit and fan on my fat divan, While the butler buttles the tea! But for now Im facin the fences And I can't affair to relax; When the whole caboodle commences, On the other side of the tracks. So Im off and runnin over the rail. Im go'n gunnin' after the quail! Off and runnin; send me the mail, To the great big world on the other side, The great big world on the farther side, The great big world on the other side of the tracks! I LOVE YOU Noble: I love you As much as I am able Considering Im wealthy Considering youre poor Belle: Thats very nice because I love you Company: She loves you She loves you She loves you Noble: I know it! Belle: As much as I am able Considering your mother Consider as being a bore My passion will endure for you Noble: And I will always love you Belle: My heart Ill keep secure for you Noble: Though other girls are so far above you To show you I am democratic Considering youre riff-raff And I am well-to-do! As noble and worthy of the label Both: As much as I am able I love you!! REAL LIVE GIRL Guess whos comin? Real live girls! Real live girls! Nothing can beat getting swept off your feet By a real live girl Dreams in your bunk don't compare with a hunk Of a real live girl Speaking of miracle this must be it Just when I started to learn how to knit Im all in stitches from finding what riches a waltz can reveal With a real live girl. [Whistling] A real live girl [Whistling] A real live girl... I've seen photographs and facsimiles That have set my heart off in a whirl But no work of art gets you right in the heart Like a real live girl [Whistling] Take your Statues of Juno And the Venus de Milo (Milo) When the fellow once you know Who wants substitutes? I over look everyone in the book For a real live girl Take your Venetian or Roman or Grecian Ideal live girl Girls were like fellows was once my belief What a reversal and what a relief I'll take the flowering hat And the towering hill and the squeal Of a real live girl Real live girl Real live girl Go be a hold out for Helen of Troy I am a healthy American boy I rather gape at the dear little shape of the stir and the kill Of a full time, occasional all operational girl [Alternate lyrics] Pardon me miss But Ive never done this With a real live girl What could be harmful In holding an armful Of a real live girl Pardon me if you're affectionate squeeze Fogs up my goggles and buckles my knees I'm simply drown in the sight and the sounds And the scent and the feel Of a real live girl REAL LIVE GIRL (Another Version) Pardon me, miss, but I've never done this with a real, live girl. Let myself dare to go dancing on air with a real, live girl. Pardon my holding you terriblt tight- after I've dreamed of you night after night. I can't let go, but I suddenly know that I've found my ideal in a real, live girl. I've seen photographs and faximilies that have set my heart off in a whirl-- But nothing can beat getting swept off your feet by a real, live girl. I'll overlook every one in the book for a real, live girl. "Girls were like fellas" Once was my belief-- what a reversall, what a relief! I'll take the flowering hat-- and the towering heal and a squeal-- OF a real, live girl! POOR LITTLE HOLLYWOOD STAR Belle: Once you were an ordinary average little girl from Illinois Once it was an ordinary average little life and what a joy Sudden success, fortune, I guess, High on its glittering bow Blithe and merry ordinary average little girl Where are you now? Carefully dressed, Carefully coached, Diamond bracelet, And emerald broached, Just to be loved from a far Poor little Hollywood star. One of the rare, One of the great, Everyone's ideal, But nobody's mate, Poor little fairytale queen, How do you fill the void Under that celluloid sheen. Smile for your fans, Live for your art, What if nobody gives that for your heart This is true very last stop Where can you go from the top? So never relax, never give in Pull in those longings, and stick out that chin Loved and adored as you are Your melancholy would seem just a trifle bizarre In this jollywood Poor little shiny secure little Hollywood star... HERES TO US Belle: Heres to us, my darling, my dear! Heres to us tonight! Not for what might happen next year, For it might not be nearly as bright. But heres to us, for better or worse, And for thanks to a merciful star. Skies are blue and muddling through For me and for you as we are. Belle and Company: And heres to us for nothing at all If theres nothing at all we can praise. Belle: Just that were together and here For the rest of our beautiful days Here to us forever and always! Heres to us, my darling, my dear! Heres to us tonight! Not for what might happen next year, For it might not be nearly as bright. But heres to us, for all that we havent, The road that we traveled so far. Skies are blue and muddling through For me and for you as we are. Belle and Company: And heres to us for nothing at all If theres nothing at all we can praise. Belle: Just for spring and wanting to sing, And the feeling like flinging bouquets. Belle and Company: Here to us forever and always! ~~~~~~~~ Again, I'm happy to help. Enjoy the lyrics! "Keep a song in your heart, and let your smile sing"

Two by Carolyn Leigh | ||
|
Here are two by Leigh, two songs to whioch I have some attachment.
WHEN IN ROME (Coleman/Leigh) (verse) When on foreign shores I am, Very truly yours I am; But if inclined to stray I am ... Sweetheart, that's the way I am! (chorus) When in Spain, for reasons I don't explain, I remain enjoying a brew; Don't deplore my fondness for Fundador You know how a Fundador can lead to a few ... And, Baby, When In Rome I Do As The Romans Do. If, perchance, I'm saying farewell to France And romance drops in from the blue; Cher amour, I beg of you, please endure My taking a brief detour with somebody new; It's just that When In Rome (etc.) And tho' from Italy I lie to you prettily, Why think of me bitterly? You know that I'm true. ... 'cept now and then in Rome, I get that old yen in Rome And, nat'rally, When In Rome (etc.) If i write happily, "Best wishes from Napoli!", Don't cable me snappily to tell me we're through. 'Cause, once again in Rome, I'm in somebody's den in Rome ... Well, Pussycat, Den in Rome Etc.) (tag) Veni, vidi ... vinci? - - - - - I believe the story is that this was written for "Little Me" and then dropped. In any case, I became familiar with it through Streisand's "People" album. - - - - - - This one's more than a bit obscure. It's connected to a movie that I dearly love, however -- "Petulia" (director: Richard Lester; with: Julie Christie, George C. Scott, Richard Chamberlain, Shirley Knight). Even for those who don't love the movie, however, I think that it's a perfectly decent lyric. PETULIA (John Barry/Leigh) I died today a little more, But nothing's lost. I've died before. I played the old forbidden game; I spoke your name, Petulia. The arms arms closing; the lips parting; The heart stopping; the chills starting. Such little things and feather-light: Your hand in mine, the summer night. Such little things ... how could they spell Eternal hell, Petulia? The door locking; the keys jingling; The slow melting; the swift mingling. But I have lived like many men, And I am doomed to live again; A broken toy that none will claim, Who speaks your name: Petulia, Petulia. - - - - - - - I've never heard of any recorded versions. All I know is that its sheet-music version is included in "Warner Bros 75th Anniversary: A Tribute In Music From the 20s Through the 90s." Perhaps it was written to publicize the movie and then lay unused? For the record, although the words seem to speak of death -- not to mention necrophilia (is that Vincent Price lurking in the background?) -- nobody dies in the movie. The closest we come is Petulia (Julie Christie), who is loved by doctor Archie (George C. Scott), being placed in critical condition by her basher spouse (Richard Chamberlain). Or are the lyrics simply a response to the tragic tone of Barry's gorgeous theme? It's the principle theme of the film, after all, the one that's used under the credits. Waggi P.S. I'd also recommend the song which Leigh and Jerome Moross wrote in connection with Preminger's "The Cardinal," which I've heard alternately referred to as "Theme From 'The Cardinal' " and "Stay With Me." |

"Petulia" (A Correction) | ||

Obviously, that line is simply "The arms closing." The repetition is entirely my own mistkae.
